The great appeal of modern judo lies in the sporting element, in the thrill of competition or shiai and the excitement of superbly trained athletes battling for gold medals. The exhilaration felt is similar to that of witnessing a boxing match or any other dynamic combat sport; there is an element of risk taking and the possibility of a complete reversal of fortunes is always there. A good judo match is a dramatic arena where anything might happen.
